Why do bra straps show under a tank top?
Almost always for one of these three reasons:
- Your bra straps are wider than your tank top's. There is no way around it: whatever is wider sticks out. This is the most common cause, and the easiest to fix.
- The straps sit too far out. Bras whose straps are set wide apart on the cup almost always fall outside a narrow tank top strap. Straps that start closer to the middle stay underneath.
- The colour stands out. White under white is the classic mistake: white underwear actually shows through light fabric, while a colour close to your skin tone disappears.
Which bra works under which type of tank top?
Tank top with wide straps. The easiest category. Choose a bra with thin straps set close together; they disappear completely. Pay particular attention to the back, because straps are often set further apart there than at the front.
Tank top with narrow spaghetti straps. Nobody wins this fight with an ordinary bra. Two honest options: you accept that a thin strap in a matching colour will still be visible, or you choose a model with removable straps. Pretending there is a bra that vanishes completely under a spaghetti strap and still supports you is not realistic.
Racerback or a top with a low back. Look for a bra whose straps meet in the middle of the back, or a model without a back fastening that sits low enough.
What colour bra under a tank top?
Choose on your skin tone, not on the colour of your tank top. Under white, cream and pastels, a light brown or skin-toned bra works better than a white one. Is a strapless bra the answer?
Rarely. A strapless has to draw all its support from the underband, so it sits tighter around your ribs and slips sooner when you move. Under a tank top, where your shoulders are covered anyway, you give up comfort for a problem that thin straps also solve. Save the strapless for clothes that really leave no other option.
What to look for when buying one
- Strap width — narrower than your tank top's.
- A seamless cup edge — a finished edge or seam shows through thin jersey; a circular-knitted cup does not.
- No fastening at the back — hooks create a bump under tightly knitted fabric.
- A wide underband — it takes over the work from the straps, so you do not have to tighten them and they are less noticeable.
