How should a bra fit? The 5-point check for every shape

How should a bra fit? The band does the heavy lifting: in a well-fitting bra the weight is carried by the band beneath your breasts, not by the shoulder straps. If the band sits horizontally and close enough that exactly two fingers slide underneath, your breasts fill the cups without gaping or spilling over, and the centre gore lies flat against your breastbone, then the fit is right. If one of those points is off, you are far from alone — an ill-fitting bra is more common than a well-fitting one.

Seven signs, seven fixes

Whatever is going wrong right now tells you exactly what needs to change. Every common complaint points to one specific sizing error, and every sizing error has a concrete fix.

Sign Diagnosis Fix
Band rides up your back Band size too large Smaller band size, often with a larger cup — see sister sizes
Straps dig into your shoulders Band is not carrying its share; the straps take over the weight Smaller band size, or adjustable straps such as those on the Luma Forma Bra 2.0
Cups gape or wrinkle Cup size too large, or the cup shape does not suit you Smaller cup, or a stretch seamless cup such as the Luma Contour Bra
Breast tissue spills over the cup or towards the underarm Cup size too small Larger cup; the VitaSculpt Push-Up Bra runs up to cup H
Centre gore floats off the breastbone Cup size too small Larger cup, possibly combined with a different band size
Red marks or grooves under the bust Band too tight, or the underwire is pinching Larger band size, or switch to a wireless design
You tug and readjust all day Several sizing errors at once Measure again using the step-by-step measuring guide

The 5-point check in two minutes

Put the bra on, stand in front of a mirror and work through these five points. That is all it takes to know whether the size is right.

1. The band

The band sits horizontally around your ribcage, at the same height front and back. You can slide two fingers underneath — no more. Raise your arms: if the band stays put, it fits. If it shoots upwards, the band size is too large.

2. The cups

Breast tissue fills the cup completely, with no empty space at the top and nothing pushing over the edge or towards the underarm. Wrinkles in the fabric mean too large; a double swell above the cup edge means too small.

3. The centre gore

On bras with separate cups, the centre gore lies flat against the breastbone. If you can pull it forward, or if it rests on breast tissue, the cup is too small. Seamless designs without a gore should sit close all the way round without pressing anywhere.

4. The straps

One finger fits under each strap. Straps only stabilise; they are not meant to carry weight. If they slip, adjust them first. If they keep slipping, the design is cut too wide for your shoulder width.

5. The sides

The side panel lies smooth against your ribs, with no tissue bulging over the edge. A side panel that wanders upwards points, once again, to a band size that is too large.

Tip: always fasten a new bra on the loosest hook. Elastane stretches with wear and washing; the tighter hooks are your reserve for a few months from now. If a new bra only fits on the tightest hook, you are in effect buying a size too large.

Why the band does the heavy lifting

A bra works as an anchor point: the band around your ribcage provides the carrying power, and the straps hold the cups in place. If the band sits too loose, the entire weight shifts to the shoulder straps. Anyone with a fuller cup knows the result: grooves in the shoulders, tension in the neck and upper back, and a band that hangs between the shoulder blades by the end of the day. You do not solve that with softer straps, but with a band that sits close enough to carry.

Wrong size or wrong design

If the tape measure says the size is right but the bra still sits badly, look at the design. Breasts differ in shape: full at the top or full underneath, wide-set or close-set. A moulded cup gives structure to a round, full shape; a stretchy seamless cup follows a softer or uneven shape better. If you fall between two cup sizes, stretch fabric serves you better than foam. How a wireless bra can still support firmly is covered in the guide to support without underwire.

Measuring again: two measurements, one answer

Measure your underbust snugly and horizontally directly beneath the breast, and your overbust loosely across the fullest point. The difference between the two determines the cup: every 2 to 2.5 centimetres moves the cup letter one step. The full step-by-step method with size chart is in the guide on measuring your bra size; also check the size advice for each product, because fit varies by design. If the calculated size feels not quite right, a sister size — one band size down with one cup size up, or the other way round — is often the answer.

Three fits from our own range

How a bra should fit depends on when you wear it, which is why the best design differs by situation.

Seamless wireless Luma Contour Bra — an example of how a bra should fit without showing through

The Luma Contour Bra is seamlessly knitted with a wide underband and no underwire. The stretch cup follows your natural breast shape and forgives small fluctuations in weight or cycle — available in twelve colours and in sizes S to XXL. The Luma Forma Bra 2.0 adds moulded foam cups and adjustable shoulder straps, for anyone looking for more shape and lift.

VitaSculpt Push-Up Bra with classic band and cup sizes for a bra that fits precisely

If you want to fit to the centimetre in classic sizing, the VitaSculpt Push-Up Bra offers band sizes 75 to 110 and cup sizes B to H — including sizes that are rarely in stock on the high street.

Frequently asked questions about bra fit

How do I know whether my bra is the right size?

Run through the five points: band horizontal with two fingers of room, cups filled without gaping or spilling, centre gore flat against the breastbone, straps without pressure and smooth side panels. If one point is off, measure again.

How tight should a bra band be?

Tight enough that exactly two fingers fit underneath, loose enough to breathe freely. The band stays in place when you raise your arms. Fasten a new bra on the loosest hook so you can tighten it as the elastane stretches.

Why does my bra band ride up my back?

The band size is too large. The weight of the breasts pulls the bra down at the front, which pushes the band up at the back. A smaller band size, often with one cup letter more, solves this.

What does it mean when my cups gape or wrinkle?

Empty space or wrinkles mean the cup is too large, or that the shape does not suit your breast shape. Try one cup size smaller, or choose a stretchy seamless cup that settles into your shape.

My straps dig into my shoulders — larger or smaller size?

Usually a smaller band size. Digging straps mean the band is not carrying the weight and the straps are taking over. Wider straps soften the symptom; a close-fitting band removes the cause.

How often should I remeasure my bra size?

At least once a year, and additionally after a weight change of around three kilos, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and when your exercise routine changes. Breasts change faster than most people think.

When is a bra worn out?

Once the band no longer sits close enough on the tightest hook, the elastane has stretched out and the bra no longer carries as intended. Rotating three to four bras, that usually happens after six to twelve months of daily wear.

Does it matter how I put my bra on?

Yes. Fasten the band, lean forward slightly and scoop each breast fully into the cup, including the tissue towards the underarm. That is the only way to judge the real fit and to stop tissue sitting outside the cup.
