A contour bra is a bra with a moulded cup that holds its round shape by itself, even while the bra is lying in your drawer. That shape sits in the cup itself, in a thin layer of foam or shaped knit, and not in an underwire. The result is a smooth, even line under your clothes, without anything padding out or pushing up.
What makes a contour bra different from an ordinary bra?
The difference is in the cup, not in the support. On an ordinary bra with loose fabric, the cup takes on the shape of your breast; on a contour bra it is the other way round: the cup already has a shape and your breast fills it. As a result the top edge stays lying smooth and nothing shows through thin jersey or a knitted jumper.
Two misunderstandings that come up often:
- A contour bra is not a push-up. A push-up has extra padding at the bottom that pushes your breast up and towards the centre. A contour bra pads out nothing; it only keeps the shape smooth. If you want more cleavage, look for a push-up; if you want an invisible line, look for a contour.
- A contour bra is not a bralette. A bralette has a soft, unshaped cup that folds flat. That is pleasantly light, but under tight clothing it tends to give wrinkles in the fabric.
Do you need an underwire for support?
No, and that is exactly where many contour bras make the difference. An underwire concentrates the support in one line of metal under your breast. A well-constructed contour bra draws that support from the combination of a wide underband and a cup that holds its shape. The band does the work, and precisely because the pressure is spread over a wide area, you feel it less.
The practical test: raise your arms. If the band rides up, it is too loose, and the weight then pulls on your straps instead of on your band. More about that in how should a bra fit.
Who does a contour bra work well for?
- Under thin or smooth fabrics — jersey, silk, knitted jumpers. A seam or an edge shows immediately there, and a moulded cup prevents that.
- If you want to move away from underwires but are afraid of giving up support. The shape stays, the pressure point goes.
- With asymmetry, which applies to almost everyone: a moulded cup makes the difference between left and right less visible than a soft cup does.
It is less suitable if what you want is a very soft, unshaped fit to sleep in, or if you want to fill a deeply cut neckline. A bralette or a push-up makes more sense there.
What to look for when choosing
- The top edge of the cup. It should lie flat against your skin. If it stands away, the cup is too big; if it cuts in, it is too small.
- The width of the underband. The wider it is, the more the pressure is spread and the less likely a red mark becomes.
- Seams and fastening. A circular-knitted cup with no finished edge and no hooks at the back shows nowhere.
- Your size, measured again. With a moulded cup the size counts for more than with a soft one, because the cup does not adapt. Use the size finder: two measurements, about two minutes.
