Bra with side support: how side-boning lifts without underwire

A bra with side support has a built-in reinforcement on the outer edge of the cup, which holds your breast tissue toward the centre instead of letting it shift toward your armpit. That's the same job an underwire does, only without a hard wire beneath your breast. In the Luma Forma BH 2.0 this construction is called Side-Boning Technology 2.0: reinforcement in the side panels that prevents bulging and smooths the sides. Below you'll find how this technique works, who notices the difference, and what to check before you order.

Where does the support come from? Three constructions compared

Support in a bra always comes from somewhere. The only question is whether it comes from a rigid component or from the structure of the fabric itself.

Construction How the support is created What you notice Novyre model
Underwire Half ring of metal or plastic beneath the cup Fixed shape, but pressure points under the breast and near the breastbone Not in our range
Side support (Side-Boning) Reinforced side panel that extends toward the shoulder strap Breast stays centred, side stays smooth, no hard wire Luma Forma BH 2.0 — €43,15
Stretch zones only Multi-layer seamless knit that distributes tension Soft and invisible, less shaping for fuller cups Luma Contour BH — €29,95

So the difference isn't "support or no support", but where that support comes from and how firm it feels against your skin. An overview of all our underwire-free models can be found at all bras without underwire.

What side support actually does to your breast shape

Breast tissue is soft and moves in the direction of least resistance. Without guidance, that's almost always outward, toward your armpit. You see this as a bulge beside the cup, and you feel it when your arm brushes against an edge with every movement.

A reinforced side panel pushes that tissue back toward the centre. The result is a narrower silhouette from the front and a smoother line under your clothes. The reinforcement extends into the shoulder strap, so the cup keeps its shape instead of sagging.

Centring instead of flattening

Side support is not compression. A compression bra pushes your breast toward your ribs and flattens the shape. A side panel works in the other direction: it holds volume in place where you want it. That makes it a different solution than a tight sports bra, even though the first second can feel similar.

More room to move your arm

With larger cup sizes, the armhole is usually the first thing that feels tight, because tissue gets in the way. When that tissue is centred, space actually opens up under your armpit. That is why side support is often used specifically for larger sizes, and why many women describe it as "finally I can lift my arm normally".

Side-Boning 2.0: how Novyre solves it without an underwire

The Luma Forma Bra 2.0 combines three things that together take over the role of an underwire. Integrated memory foam cups provide support and shaping without any underwires involved. The Side-Boning Technology 2.0 sits in the side panels and prevents bulging. A double-layer construction means none of this structure shows through your clothing.

The model comes in thirteen sizes, from XS to 3XL, including the Plus in-between sizes S+, M+, L+, XL+, XXL+ and 3XL+. Those in-between sizes exist precisely because a side panel only works if it sits in the right place: half a size difference already shifts the reinforcement noticeably. The price is €43.15.

Tip: lay the bra flat on a table and pinch the fabric right next to the cup, between the cup and the side seam. If you feel a clearly firmer layer there than in the rest of the side panel, the model has genuine side support. If you feel the same soft fabric everywhere, the support is coming from stretch alone.

How to recognise a bra with side support that actually works

Five things you can check, without a product description:

  1. The side panel is higher than the cup. If the panel only reaches halfway, your breast still spills over it.
  2. The reinforcement continues into the strap. A panel that stops abruptly at the top edge will pull crooked as soon as you move.
  3. The back band stays horizontal. If the band creeps up at the back, the side panel loses its grip, no matter how firm it is.
  4. The cup has multiple sections or a moulded shell. The more shaping built into the cup itself, the less the side panel has to do on its own.
  5. There is no hard edge against your armpit. Good side support should feel like firmness, not like a line.

If you want to go deeper into the support question, bra without underwire with support goes further into where support comes from when there is no underwire.

Who side support makes a difference for

Side support isn’t a universal upgrade. It solves a specific problem, and not everyone has that problem. If you recognize yourself in two or more of these points, it’s worth considering:

  • You see a bulge next to the cup, toward your armpit, under fitted clothing.
  • Your breasts have a naturally wider root and tend to spread outward.
  • You wear cup size D or larger and lose shape as soon as you skip an underwire.
  • Your armhole pinches while the straps and back band fit fine.
  • You want the shape of an underwire bra, but not the pressure under your bust.

If you mainly struggle with a band that pinches or straps that slip, side support isn’t your solution — the problem lies in the size. Larger sizes with half sizes can be found at plus size bra.

Choosing a size: the back band makes or breaks your side support

A side panel can only push if it has something to push against. That anchor is the back band. If it’s too loose, the whole construction shifts outward with your breast and the reinforcement does nothing. If it’s too tight, the panel gets pulled backward and the top edge cuts into your side.

Practical order: first measure your underbust and your bust circumference using the size guide, which takes about two minutes. If you fall between two sizes, check the Luma Forma 2.0 for the Plus half sizes — they were made exactly for that gap. For more on why that band matters so much, see bra with wide back band.

Care: how to keep the side reinforcement in shape

The reinforcement in a side panel is fabric, not metal. That means it can fatigue if you treat it incorrectly. Novyre recommends washing the Luma Contour at 30 degrees in a wash bag and hanging it to dry, not tumble drying. The same rule is wise for any model with a reinforced side panel: heat and high-speed spinning are what strip the shape from the construction.

Alternating between two bras so each gets a chance to rest noticeably extends their lifespan. With normal use and washing at 30 degrees, a Luma Contour lasts 1 to 2 years with daily wear.

Frequently asked questions about a bra with side support

What’s the difference between side support and an underwire?

An underwire is a half-ring of metal or plastic that runs under and around the cup and lifts the breast from below. Side support is a reinforced piece of fabric on the outer side of the cup that keeps the tissue toward the center. The underwire works vertically, the side panel horizontally. They can occur together, but side support also works perfectly well on its own.

Do I need side support with a small cup size?

Usually not. With less volume there is little tissue that can shift outward, so the panel does little. If your breast tissue is naturally attached wide, it can make a difference at any cup size, since that depends on your shape, not your size.

Can a bra with side support cut into your underarm?

If the style fits well, no. If the top edge of the panel does cut in, the cup is almost always too small or the band too tight. The panel then gets pulled backward and the edge ends up against your skin instead of against your breast tissue.

Does side support work without underwire at larger cup sizes?

Yes, but then the other components need to work together. The Luma Forma Bra 2.0 combines the side panel with memory foam cups and a double-layer construction, and goes up to and including size 3XL and 3XL+. Without a shaped cup and a firm band, the side panel carries the load alone, and that is too much to ask with heavier cups.

Does the side reinforcement hold up after washing?

Yes, if washed at 30 degrees in a wash bag and hung to dry. What breaks down the reinforcement is the dryer and prolonged high-speed spinning. Also store your bras lying flat or nested inside each other rather than folded in half, so the cup shape stays intact.

Does side support show under tight clothing?

That depends on the finish. If the reinforcement sits between two layers of fabric, as in the double-layer construction of the Luma Forma 2.0, there is no separate edge that shows through. Loose stitched-in boning or a panel with a thick hem will show through under thin jersey.

Which size should I choose if I fall between two sizes?

With the Luma Forma Bra 2.0, choose the Plus in-between size: S+, M+, L+, XL+, XXL+ or 3XL+. With the Luma Contour, which runs from S up to and including XXL without in-between sizes, Novyre recommends the larger of the two, because the four stretch zones absorb the difference.

If you are still unsure which style suits your shape, the order is simple: measure your size with the size guide and then check out the Luma Forma Bra 2.0 if you are looking for side support, or the Luma Contour Bra if comfort and invisibility matter more to you. If it does not fit, Novyre offers an exchange, and the new size ships out first.
