Bra digging in under your arms? Here's how to fix it

If your bra digs in under your arms, it's usually caused by a side panel that sits too high or too tight, a wire tip that presses into the fold near your arm, or a cup that's too small. A wireless bra with a wide underband, like the Novyre Luma Contour, removes that pressure point. Try first, then pay; 14 days to decide.

Why does your bra dig in under your arms?

The side of a bra is the narrowest piece of construction that does the most work. That's where the underband, side panel and cup edge all meet, right where your arm moves all day long. If something there sits too high, too hard or too tight, you feel it with every movement. Four causes come up most often:

  • The side panel sits too high. If the side runs all the way into the fold of your armpit, the edge rubs against the same spot with every arm movement. That feels more like pinching and chafing than support.
  • The wire tip presses in. A wire should sit in the fold under your bust and stop there. If it sits too high or is too short for your shape, the hard tip ends up right at the side, against your ribs near the armpit.
  • The band size is too small. A band that's too tight pulls the side panel up and inward with it. You barely notice it at the front, but you feel it all the more at the side.
  • The cup is too small. If the volume doesn't fit, tissue shifts sideways toward your armpit and gets squeezed between the cup edge and your arm. In that case, it's not the bra that digs in, but what the bra is pushing outward.

There's a fifth, less obvious cause: seams and labels in the wrong place. A thick stitched seam or lace edge that moves under your arm all day irritates even when the size is perfectly right. That's exactly why a seamless wireless bra is, for many women, the first one that stays calm at the sides: no wire tip, no closure and no thick seams in the spot where your skin is most sensitive.

Is it my size or the design?

That distinction determines whether you need a different size or a different design. Two quick checks give you the answer.

Check 1: the band. Does the underband sit horizontally around your body and does it not ride up when you lift your arms? Can you slide two fingers underneath it, no more and no less? If not, your band size is off and it's pulling the whole construction out of shape. Measure your underbust and your bust circumference in centimetres and have your size calculated with the size guide with measuring instructions: two measurements, about two minutes of work.

Check 2: the edge near your arm. Raise your arm and look in the mirror. If the top edge of the side panel disappears into the crease of your armpit, the style sits too high for your shape and a different size won't help. If the edge stays neatly below your armpit but the skin around it bulges, the cup is too small and volume is being pushed to the side.

If you fall right between two sizes, one pinches and the other gapes. You can read how to solve that in our article on wearing a bra in a half size.

What helps against a bra that cuts in under your arms?

1. Remove the hard pressure point. Without an underwire, there's no metal tip that can dig into your ribs on the side. Support then comes from the fabric, the shaped cups and the band together, so it's spread out instead of concentrated on one point.

2. Choose width over tightness. Don't go down a band size for more support. A wide underband carries the same weight over more skin, which lowers the pressure per centimetre and stops the side panel from being pulled inward.

3. Pay attention to the height of the side panel. A side panel that stays below the crease of your armpit moves with your arm instead of against it. You can check this in the fitting room or at home in ten seconds: arms up, and watch what the edge does.

4. Choose seamless where your skin rubs. Seamless contour cups and a smooth finish mean no stitching running over the same spot all day. That reduces both irritation and visible pressure marks under thin clothing.

If the area stays painful or irritated even though your bra fits well, talk to your doctor. For the everyday pinching complaint, the solution is almost always in the size and construction.

Which bra doesn't cut in under your arms?

The Luma Contour, a wireless bra with a wide underband, is designed specifically for this kind of pressure point. No underwire and no closure, so no hard tip that can dig in at the side. Seamless contour cups shape without stitching, and a wide band spreads the weight instead of concentrating it. It comes in 12 colours and in sizes S to XXL; the current price is on the product page.

If you have a fuller cup and tissue shifts toward your armpit, the Luma Forma, a wireless bra with side support, is the more logical choice. It draws support from integrated foam cups, side boning against spillage and a wide underband in a double-layer construction, and comes in 13 sizes including half sizes. The side panel keeps the tissue in the cup instead of letting it shift sideways.

What if tissue shifts from beside the cup toward your armpit?

Then constriction is the result, not the cause. Without a firm side panel, breast tissue shifts sideways over the course of the day, and whatever comes out beside the cup gets pinched at your arm. A bigger cup alone doesn't solve that: without side support, the tissue shifts away just the same. For how that works and what to look for, see breast spilling out of your bra. If your bra also feels tight all over instead of just at the side, read which bra doesn't pinch. And if you see a red line on your skin at the end of the day, red marks from your bra is the article for that.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my bra pinch under my armpits?

Usually because the side panel sits too high and runs into your armpit fold, because an underwire end presses against your ribs at the side, or because the band size is too small and pulls the side panel inward. If the cup is too small, tissue shifts sideways and gets pinched at your arm.

Does a wireless bra help against pinching under your armpits?

For many women, yes. Without an underwire, there's no hard end that can press exactly into your skin at the side, and support comes from the fabric, the contour cups and the wide band working together. That said, size still matters: a bra that's too small will pinch even without an underwire.

Should I take a bigger size if my bra pinches under the armpits?

Not automatically. If the band fits well but the side still disappears into your armpit fold, the style sits too high and a different size won't help. If volume spills out at the side, the cup is indeed too small. Measure your size again with the size guide before choosing something new.

Can I try a bra at home first if I'm not sure?

Yes. At Novyre, every order works on a Try first, pay later basis: you try the bra calmly at home and only pay for what you keep. You have 14 days to decide, enough to feel on an ordinary working day whether the side stays in place without rubbing.

Try first, pay later. Order the Luma Contour, try it at home for 14 days on an ordinary day, and only pay for what you keep.
