A wire-free bra that really does support

A bra without an underwire can support you just as well as one with it; the support simply comes from somewhere else. Not from a wire under your bust, but from the width of the underband and from cups that hold their own shape. If a wire-free bra has not worked for you before, it is almost always down to one of those two, or to the size.

Why an underwire actually does so little

An underwire holds the cup in place, but it barely carries any weight. Your underband does that. It runs all the way around your ribcage, giving it many times more surface area than two straps or a thin piece of metal. The wider that band, the more weight it takes, and the less you notice it.

That is also why an underwire so often hurts: it concentrates pressure along a single line. If it sits half a centimetre out of place, you feel it all day. A wide, seamless band cannot do that, because there is no line to press along.

What to look for in a wire-free bra

• The width of the underband. This matters most. Narrow means more pressure per centimetre, and that gives you a red mark or a band that rolls up on itself.
• A cup that holds its shape. A soft, unmoulded cup is pleasantly light but offers little hold on a fuller bust. A pre-moulded cup keeps the line smooth, even under thin jersey.
• Side reinforcement. Without an underwire, volume wants to escape sideways. A reinforced side panel stops that without anything digging in.
• How the back is finished. A smooth back with no fastening gives the flattest line under a close-fitting top. A flat hook fastening, on the other hand, gives you adjustability in the band size, so you can alter the band as your body changes. Choose whichever matters more to you.
• Your measured size. With a shape-retaining cup, size counts for more than with a soft one, because the cup does not adapt itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does a wire-free bra give enough support?

Yes, provided the underband is wide enough and the cup holds its shape. The support then comes from the construction instead of from a wire, which spreads the pressure over a larger area. For a fuller cup, choose a model with side reinforcement.

Does a wire-free bra work for a D cup or larger?

Yes, but then the model matters more. A soft, unmoulded cup offers little hold once there is more volume. Choose a pre-moulded cup with a reinforced side panel and a wide band, and measure your size afresh rather than sticking with your old bra size.

Do your bras have a fastening?

That depends on the model. The Luma Contour has none: you pull it on like a top, with a smooth back. The Luma Forma Bra 2.0 has a three-row hook fastening and adjustable, detachable straps, so you set the fit yourself.

Why does my bra ride up at the back?

Because the band is too loose. A good underband runs horizontally around your body and does not move when you lift your arms. If it rides up, go down a band size and up a cup size: that is the same cup volume with a firmer band.
